Shaver Test shoot

These last couple of images have taken me bloody ages to make not because of any technical reasons but just because Christmas and New Year managed to get in my way in spectacular fashion.

I got given a new shaver to replace the old one I've managed to drive into the ground and as soon as I saw the box I thought it could be a fun little challenge to try create my own interpretation of the product.

The entire set up was pretty simple. It involves suspending the shaver with an acrylic rod from a light stand. Lighting was taken care of by two small coloured gel soft boxes in the background to rim the shaver, and a large main source light in front to illuminated it.

Trying to get the water droplets on it to look as natural as possible was the most challenging part. I originally wanted to create a sort of water splash effect but with the space we had and time limitation I decided to go for a simpler spray bottle.
It didn't quite work out the way I wanted to with the water seeming to splash from the background however it did give many of the photos, a unique water droplet pattern which I used to my advantage.
Another challenge was the way the plastic picked up the main light. There was a strange subseface scattering in the plastic that made of the main body light up in a blue and dirty way. To solve it I had to have the main soft light as large as I could get it and as close to the shaver as possible to give it the most natural fall off.
Anything further away would result in a weird spotty scratchy looking dot that just made it look pretty cheap when I got everything in to post it looks quite boring so after a couple of hours of downloading and trying different smoke backgrounds I ended up with something that had a bit of a cyberpunk feel to it. It's pretty poppy but I like the vibe.
